SANBI is not responsible for controlling the import and export of plant material to and from South Africa.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has a regulatory function with respect to the import and export of plants and plant products to and from South Africa. The National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of South Africa issues regulations and control programs in order to improve and protect plant health in South Africa and to adhere to international obligations and agreements. In cooperation with other government departments and directorates, the NPPO administer laws and regulations pertaining to plant health and plant quarantine, as well as eradication and control measures.
